Mining
Also many businesses mine in the Rainforest. In the Amazon Rainforest, businesses mine for gold even though they get very little. The main area in which they mine are in the floodplains where rivers once ran. To find gold, they have to use special machines which separate the small sediments, gravel and mercury. Whilst most of the mercury is burnt or re-used, the rest ends up in rivers. Some of the small scale miners release more mercury than industrial businesses as their equipment is not as efficient as the more expensive machines. Studies show that small scale miners release an estimated 2.91 pounds of mercury into waterways for every small 2.2 pounds of gold mined.
Logging
Logging can cause huge problems in the Rainforest. It causes animals to lose their natural habitat and it can also cause the local tribes to lose their habitat too. As well as this, it also ruins the beauty of the views and increases global warming. When the loggers burn down the vegetation, all of the carbon dioxide is released form the trees and instead of the trees giving us humans more oxygen, it just gives us the stuff we don't need.
Helping to Save the Rainforest
Even though that today logging is illegal, there are still loggers cutting down trees in the Rainforest. To try and stop this from happening, some small groups of people have a gps to track the loggers down and stop them.
